There are increasing number of people living in comopolitan area having some forms of disease such as insomnia, depression, hearing loss, hyperintense and deafness caused by frequent exposure to “noise pollution”
“ The serious concern about living in Vietnam is noise pollution. It is noisy at home and so is outside. The only solution is to plug your ears with the headphones to avoid the noise.” - one blogger complains.

Mid night dilemma

The above is not just personal feeling but have been proved by scientists. Research have been conducted in over 150 monitor stations on 30 routes in Ho Chi Minh City, Ph. D Nguyen Dinh Tuan, College of Natural Resource and Environment Ho Chi Minh have concludes that “Noise pollution in the studied areas is exceeding the allowable levels.“

For this study, almost results have shown to be exceeding the allowable levels; other routes show no better results. Most of all, from 10 PM to 5 AM, noise levels reach the alarming level.
Research conducted in all of the 6 monitor stations including An Suong intersection, Go Vap intersection, Hang Xanh traffic circle, Ding Tien Hoang – Dien Bien Phu intersection, Phu Lam traffic circle and Huyen Tan Phat – Nguyen Van Linh intersection have indicated that the Leq in the studied roads is 85 dBA, exceeding the allowable levels of urban noise pollution 75 dBA.
Le Nhu Loc, Specialist at Ho Chi Minh Environment Protection Branch comments: “The most noise polluted station is An Suong”. The reason is because there is a large number of trucks and trailors circulating here.

Alarming level of noise pollution
Before 2008, the average increasing level of noise pollution in Ho Chi Minh City is 0.2 – 0.4 dBA. However, from 2008 this exceeds the total levels of 14 previous years.
Among the three comon forms of noise pollution: industrial activity, construction work and transportation, the main cause of noise pollution in HCMC is from transportation, principally, motor vehicles.
“In the recent years, the number of individual automobiles increase 10% anually. The demand for cars will continue to increase and serious traffic congestions are unavoidable. Noise pollution will continue to increase.” PhD Nguyen Dinh Tuan says.
PhD Pham Tien Dung, Sub-Institute of Labor protection in Ho Chi Minh City commented that the exceeding noise pollution could cause severe annoyance to the mental system and chronic high levels of stress hormones.
The most concern according to PhD Pham Tien Dung is that long-term exposure to noise pollution will effect noise sensitivity and slowly develop incurable deafness. Dr Pham Cong Nhan, Center of Labor Health and Environment HCMC says: “Frequent exposure to noise pollution will cause fatigue, social handicaps, diminished productivity, hearing loss, insomnia and most of all effecting the cardiovascular system.”

Minimize noise pollution

Ph.D Nguyen Dinh Tuan suggested to divide the noise pollution into 4 following categories:

- Allowable noise level

- Exceeding the allowable level but can be controled

- Unable to be controled

- Not allowable

According to PhD Nguyen Dinh Tuan, vehicles which cause unallowable noise pollution are not allowed to transport. For manufactory machines that produce excessive noise, they need to be replaced or sited. Some sources of unallowable noise pollution in urban areas need to be restricted by the law enforced by the local authority.
Although control noise pollution for individuals is said to be an obstacle because one tends to expose to the noise without purpose. PhD Nguyen Van Quan, College of Environment and Labor Protection of Ton Duc Thang University insists: “Measures need to be taken individually to reduce noise pollution level.”
Moreover, to reduce the effects of noise pollution to human health, we should not be in concious and not to stay in the noise intensive areas for too long, not to go outside as much as possible during the rush hour.
